The rule of three in Public Speaking
Last week I was walking in Warsaw City Center,
when I saw a big Adidas billboard where it was written:
Go for it.
In the past,
I would not have noticed difference apart from Jude Bellingham celebrating a goal,
however, this time was different.
This time something clicked in my head,
and I said to myself:
“Oh, look at them, they are doing it too”
Adidas is doing the same as Nike.
And what Nike is doing?
Do you remember that famous Nike motto?
…
If not,
let me refresh it for you: Just do it.
What do you see in common between Go for it andJust do it.
Any hint?
Yes,
both have three words.
And it is not a coincidence.

The number three is the “magic” number,
that we as humans we feel comfortable when processing information.
You can see it in the French Republic motto:
Liberté, égalité, fraternité,
on the “I have a dream” speech:
insult, injustice and exploitation
and even in the Olympic motto:
Faster, Higher, Stronger.
The number three is everywhere.
The question is – why three?
Three main reasons (it could not be another number)
✓ Three is the smallest number that can form a pattern.
✓ Our brains naturally look for patterns to try to make sense of them
✓ Creates a sense of progression and resolution
This is one of the “secret tools” to take your speech to the next level.
Make sure during your speech,
you implement at least once (do not over use it) “the rule of three”.
Example of “the rule of three” in a real life speech.
“I truly loved from my last trip to Spain.
The food was amazing – that paella by the seaside,
the weather – imagine 25 degrees all day long,
and the people – oh dios mio, they really made me feel like home.
I can’t wait to be back – Barcelona I am coming”
Do you see the “the rule of three” here?
Food, weather, people. (those are the three elements)
Now I want you you to think about this situation.
Imagine you are in the middle of your speech “doing the rule of three”
and you forgot what you wanted to say.
